Montblanc’s egalitarian bid for ‘watchmaking legitimacy’ continues in 2019 with an offering suitable for most pockets. From a sub £5,000 monopusher chronograph to a simple three-hand automatic, the brand has the majority of bases covered.

And with so much emphasis of late on designs inspired by vintage aesthetics, Montblanc has even introduced an entirely new collection, Heritage, which includes, among others, the aforementioned automatic, a GMT and a rather compelling Day Date. The collection as a whole is great addition to Montblanc’s offering, perfectly in tune with what today’s customers want and illustrates that the brand is in safe hands with the decisions being made by watch boss, Davide Cerrato.

Sitting at the top of the new collection is the Heritage Manufacture Pulsograph, a headline-grabbing limited-edition recreation of an historic Minerva original. We’ve seen the two watches side-by-side, above with Minerva on the left and Montblanc in the right, and, while the new watch features cleaner, simplified lugs, hands and crown, it is very much in the spirit of the original.

The two register chronograph has a single pusher at the two o’clock position and a blue Pulsograph scale, historically used by doctors to determine the pulse of patients, running around the perimeter of the salmon dial. Salmon dials were hot property at SIHH 2019, no doubt due to the hue’s popularity on the vintage market, although some contemporary liberties are being taken with the term these days with it covering everything from gold to copper-toned dials.

The domed dial of the 40mm stainless steel Montblanc certainly sits at the copper end of the spectrum with a central textured track serving as platform for applied anthracite 12 and 6 numerals and hour dot indices.

Polished steel dauphine hour and minute hands are inset with Super-LumiNova while central chronograph seconds, running second and chronograph minute hand are blued to match the Pulsograph scale. The chronograph minute register also features authentic elongated 3/6/9 indices which signified long-distance call charge changes in the days of the payphone, although we wouldn’t mind discovering what the modern equivalent might be.

The watch houses a Minerva-signed MB M13.21, a version of the Minerva movement used within Montblanc’s exceptional 1858 Monopusher chronographs. It’s exquisitely finished and the depth revealed within the movement through its architecture is always a joy to behold.

Just 100 pieces of the Montblanc Heritage Pulsograph, secured on an anthracite Sfumato alligator leather strap, will be created priced at 28,000 Euros.
