About this issue

This issue, we wanted to bring together some of THE MOST UNCOMPROMISING creations out there – the kinds of watches and jewellery that, due to their artistry and idiosyncrasy, simply demand A SECOND LOOK. Each reflects a different philosophy of craftsmanship, while also speaking to the ongoing dialogue between tradition and reinvention that runs throughout our industry.

For our cover story, writer Robin Swithinbank takes us on a trip through the most enduring watches of all time, as centred by the new Vacheron Constantin Overseas. In the cover shoot, we tried to capture how it feels to HAVE YOUR HEAD BY THE SEASIDE when your life is still in the city. As we endure a heatwave in London at the time of going to print, it’s certainly a recognisable feeling – plus, as Habib is OUR FIRST ‘TOP 50’ MODEL ON OUR FRONT COVER, we were certainly feeling the heat.

Speaking of London, elsewhere in this issue’s pages you’ll find we’re thinking about British quirk with a new Hermès watch and boutique. Going farther afield, we also analyse the elite appeal of Zenith and Naoya Hida’s new collaboration. The Japanese independent watchmaker is known for bringing traditional craft techniques to its dials, with a mesmerising outcome for any collector who has maintained their sense of wonder. Another hot topic for collectors – and one that also brings art together with horology – is the new Rolex Oyster Perpetual featuring the Jubilee motif on its dial. At our offices, we noticed the striking resemblance to the Italian artist Alighiero Boetti’s embroidered works with this dial, and couldn’t resist nicknaming this watch “the Boetti” as a result. That said, perhaps Rolex collectors will come up with something more creative. Do let us know…

Meanwhile, all this talk of timeless designs has got us thinking: in an age increasingly defined by speed, THE ART OF DOING LESS may be the most enduring luxury of all. So – enjoy the summer!
