La dolce vita

After seasons of to-ing and fro-ing in the sartorial spotlight (plus a stellar turn in a sketch by Jimmy Fallon and the Hollywood actor Paul Rudd on The Tonight Show in February), the high fashion beanie is officially back, thanks to designer Kim Jones. At June’s Dior Summer 2024 menswear show, Jones celebrated his fifth anniversary at the Maison with a collection dedicated to all the creative directors that had gone before him in decades past, including crisp tailoring in homage to Yves Saint Laurent’s tenure, rich textures as a tribute to Marc Bohan and embroidery redolent of Gianfranco Ferré.

Topping off each riveting look were eye-catching beanies by milliner Stephen Jones (no relation) and couture knitter Cecile Feilchenfeldt, as inspired by New Wave club kids – all dizzying hues and brilliant textures. Each also bore a velvet ronghua bloom, created in the centuries-old tradition of Chinese floral adornments.
